A DAY TO BE PROUD 27/08/2010

An outstanding numerical entry of over 300 was matched by a great depth of quality. Both judges who were from Scotland, Andrew Hornall from the Falleninch Herd in Stirling and Archie MacGregor from the Allanfaud herd in central Scotland were on their feet for nearly six hours adjudicating some very competitive classes.

It was an outstanding show for a number of breeders including the: Foley Family from Killeagh, Co. Cork who won the Senior Female and Senior Male Championship and the Senior Pairs section with the same animals who took the same titles at the 2009 National Show, Royal Victorienne and Royal Baladin.

Jon Regan from Liscally, Tawley, Co. Leitrim who won the Reserve Senior Male Calf Championship with Liscally Eti; First Prize with Liscally Emerald Star; Second Prize with Liscally Emer; First Prize in the Calf Pairs Section and First Prize in the Exhibitor Bred Section, all with 3 home bred calves.

Oliver Connolly, Lahinch, Hollymount, Co. Mayo, who with his two home bred calves won the Junior Male Calf Championship with Lahinch Franie; First Prize with Lahinch Frank and Second Prize in the Calf Pairs Section.

Ryan Family from Cabra, Thurles who went home with a bag full of rosettes having won the Reserve Overall Senior Female Championship with their classy twenty-two months old heifer “Goldstar Dolce” (she also received a red rosette in the calf section of the 2009 National Show); First Prize with Goldstar Florence; Third Prize in the Calf Pairs; Third Prize with Goldstar Vabelle; Second Prize with Goldstar Adorable and Second Prize in the Adult Pairs Section.

Kathleen & Michael Hargroves, from Portlaoise whose great heifer “Ballydavis Champion” once again took a first prize at the National Show Charolais. She has been shown at four National Show and on each occasion she has taken home at least a red rosette.

Joan and Tim Sugrue from Bennetssbridge, Co. Kilkenny who received a red rosette for their cow “Kilbline Utica” who is dam of “Kilbline Cupidon” a bull purchased by the National Cattle Breeding Centre at the Performance Test Station in Tully. “Kilbline Cupidon” is by “Nevers”, his A.I. code is KLU and his semen is available from the NCBC.

The show has both a pedigree and commercial section and Scottish judge, Archie McGregor described the class of young commercial male calves as the best class in that age group which he had ever judged.

The winners of the class were Brothers C & P Lynch, from Dromore, Bailieborough, Co. Cavan, with their male calf born 20th February 2010 by a Charolais sire and out of a Charolais X dam.

Commercial championship went to David McMahon, Strokestown for his Charolais x heifer, born December 2007 by “Doonally New”.

Reserve championship went to Joshua Miller, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal for his January 2009 born bullock by “Lanzac”.

The Young Breeders Section of the Show was held the previous evening and the commitment and expertise of the young people participating was very evident. There was keen rivalry and good sport as the competitors were put through their paces by master judge Richard O’Beirne.

The Junior Section was won by Clara Higgins, Ballindine, Claremorris, Co. Mayo while top placing in the Senior Section went to Marie Louise Ryan, Cabra, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.
