TOP OF €4,300 FOR CHAROLAIS IN ATHENRY 11/04/2014
Despite the large number of Charolais bulls already sold this spring, Charolais breeders met a very good trade, achieving an average of €2,970 (same as last year’s €2,959) on their annual outing to Athenry.   Price range was from €2,200 to €4,300 with a clearance of 65%.  The sale attracted a large attendance with the majority of buyers local Co. Galway farmers.


Male championship and top price of the day €4,300 went to local breeder, James Brady, Lissyconner, Dunmore, Co. Galway for DUNMORE HARRY , a Cottage Devon son out of an Indurain home bred dam.  He has 4 stars for carcase weight and 4 ½ for carcase conformation.  and was purchased by Joe Quinn, Coagula, Clogher, Claremorris, Co. Mayo.


Reserve male championship went to Mattie Kelly, Cloughbrack, Newbridge, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, for his 17 months old bull, CLOUGHBRACK HUGO.  He is by Cloverfield Excellent (CXY) and out of a home bred dam by Panama.   He has 3 ½ stars in the Terminal index, 4 stars for carcase weight and 5 for carcase conformation and was purchased for €3,000 by Patrick Rooney, Barnaderg, Tuam, Co. Galway.


Mattie’s second sale offering who stood second in his class to the reserve champion sold for €2,800.   CLOUGHBRACK INDIANA by Nelson and out of a home bred dam by Padirac was purchased by Olive Nolan, Carrareagh, Ballyglunin, Tuam.


€4,000 was received by Stan Glynn, Blakehill, Cong, Co. Mayo for his second prize winner, 13 months old, BLAKEHILL INDIANA.  A son of Thrunton Voldemort (TVO) he is out of a Castlemartin bred dam.   He has the top 5 star rating for carcase conformation and 4 ½ stars for carcase weight and a muscle score of 126 which puts him in the top 1% of the breed for muscle.  He was purchased by Michael Coughlan, Skeaghanore, Ballydehob, Co. Cork.


€3,600 went to Tony Brady, Feaghmore, Eyrecourt, Ballinasloe, for his first prize winner, KAROOLA IROKE, by Major and out of a home bred dam by Laheens Idol.  He has 3 stars in the Terminal index and a very good muscle score of 121 (top 5% of the breed).  He was purchased by Michael Kavanagh, Caherwilliam, Kinvara, Co Galway.


€3,050 was received by William Flynn, Tullyvillage, Newbridge, Ballinasloe for TULLYVILLAGE HENRY.   By the easy calving sire Pirate he is out of Culla Fionola by Mulroog Viacom.   He has 4 ½ stars in both the Terminal and Maternal indexes.  He was purchased by local breeder Joe Walsh, Pollough, Rosscahill, Co. Galway.


€3,000 went to PJ & Matt Ryan, Clonismullen, Drom, Borrisoleigh, Thurles, Co. Tipperary for KILVILCORRIS IBOB.   By Utrillo Mic and out of a home bred dam “Kilvilcorris Celine by Doonally New he was purchased by Gerard Burke, Cahertubber, Athenry, Co. Galway.
