CHAMPION SELLS FOR €6,000 26/04/2014
At the seventh Charolais Society run sale this Spring the Charolais bull trade continued to meet a good commercial demand which saw in excess of 60% of the bulls find new homes at an average of €3,100 (average at same sale last year was €3,060).


Top price of €6,000 was paid for the senior champion CLENAGH HILTON bred by the Quin family from Clenagh, Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co. Clare.   By Texan-Gie and out of a home bred dam by Roundhill Rocky he was purchased by Rosemary Murphy, Ballybinaby, Dundalk, Co. Louth.  He has the top 5 star rating for carcase weight, for carcase conformation and docility and 4 ½ stars in the Overall Terminal Index.  One of the best bulls he had seen this spring was how Judge Martin O’Connor described his senior champion and his judgement was backed by bidders at the sale with the bull being sold by auctioneer Tom Cox in less than 1 minute.


The Quins’ sold their second sale offering, fourteen months old CLENAGH IDEAL for €3,000.  Second in his class to the Reserve Junior Champion he is by Panama (PNZ) and out of a home bred dam by Mogador.  He was purchased by Thomas Quigley, Timahoe, Portlaoise, Co. Laois.


Junior championship sash went to Stephen McGuinness, Drumboy, Mohill, Co. Leitrim for 12 months old DRUMBOY ISAAC by Ballylannon Franky (FYB) and out of a home bred dam by Prime Roberto.  He sold for €3,600 to Oliver Leonard, Cabragh, Castlehill, Ballina, Co. Mayo.


€4,000 was received by Matt & P.J. Ryan, Clonismullen, Drom, Borrisoleigh, Thurles for KILVILCORRIS IMPECCABLE by Doonally New and out of a home bred dam by Royal Viscount.


He has the top 5 star rating for carcase weight, for carcase conformation and in the Overall Terminal Index.  He was purchased by John Donoghue, Ballybur, Cuffesgrange, Co. Kilkenny.


€3,900 was received by Edward Walsh, Aghafad, Carrickmacross, Co. Monghan for his first prize winner HILLCREST INDIANA.    By Excellent and out of a Meillard bred dam he was purchased by Michael Nally, Winetown, Rathown, Co. Westmeath.


€3,800 secured fourteen months old WILLIAMSTOWN IAN for Billy Glazebrook, Crewburn Farm, Strathaven, Lanarkshire, Scotland.   Bred by Aidan Farrell, Boyanna, Moate, Co. Westmeath he is by Cloverfield Excellent and out of Ratesh Amber by Neptune.   He has the top 5 star rating for carcase weight, for carcase conformation and 3 ½ stars in the Overall Terminal Index.


€3,500 was received by Co. Clare breeder Richard Hackett, Coolistigue, Clonlara for his Reserve Senior Champion, 15 months old LIMKILN IMPROVER.   By Doonally New and out of a home bred dam by Doonally Olmeto he was purchased by Paul Fallon, Bearnacullen, Knockcroghery, Co. Roscommon.   He has 4 stars for carcase weight, for carcase conformation and docility and 4 ½ stars in the Overall Terminal Index.


Two lots shared the €3,300 price tag.


First €3,300 went to Louise Quinn, Ballymoran House, Edenderry, Co. Offaly for BALLYM HAMILTON.   By their imported stock bull Ballym Falcon and out of a home bred dam by Ballym Tolerant he was purchased by James Walshe, Park House, Carlow.


The second €3,300 was paid for the Reserve Junior Champion LISNAGRE IVAN.  Bred by Jim Geoghegan, Lisnagre, Streamstown, Mullingar he was purchased by Joseph Tyther, Kilderry, Milltown, Co. Kerry.   Just 14 months of age he is by Utrillo Mic and out of a home bred dam by Hermes.


Price range was from €2,000 to €6,000 and two bulls were exported to Scotland. The next and final Spring Charolais Society show/sale will be held on Saturday, 24th May in Tullamore Mart.
