Seamus Mc Enaney Suckler Farmer Report 25/11/2014
Christmas cracker bulls continue to exceed all expectations

Rattigan Giovani was purchased at the 2012 Christmas cracker show and sale for €3600 by well-known GAA manager Seamus Mc Enaney from Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan. Sired by ‘Fury Action’ out of a ‘Hermes’ bred cow, Giovani was a high terminal index sire purchased to produce top quality weanlings for the autumn market. This spring the 29 heifers that were put in calf to Giovani in his first year calved down, producing 29 live healthy calves.

On the 17th of October the 29 weanlings were sold in Cootehill Mart, Co. Cavan. 14 heifers sold at an average weight of 308kg at an average price of €905 (2.96c/kg), with the top price heifer weighing 290kg and selling for €1210. The 15 bulls sold at an average weight of 325kg at an average price of €890 (2.73c/kg), with the top price bull weighing 310kg and selling for €990. Performance does not get much more consistent than that, in the words of Seamus himself “He is easy calved and I have super calves, what more could I want’.
