CHAROLAIS SPRING PREMIER TOPS €10,500 AND ACHIEVES AN AVERAGE OF €4,459 21/03/2015
A very good show of cattle met a great strong trade at the Charolais spring premier in Elphin.  A real solid commercial trade underpinned the day’s trading with the sale achieving an outstanding clearance of just short of 80%.


Both the bull sale average increased from a very good figure of €3,972 last year up to €4,459 this year plus the clearance figure went from 70% last year to almost 80% this year.


Two bulls were exported to Scotland, with sixteen cattle going to Northern Ireland.


Topping the sale at €10,500 (up from a top of €8,000 at last spring’s premier) was LAHEENS JASON reserve junior male champion of the show.  A son of Lisnagre Elite he is out of a home bred dam by Doonally New.  Bred by local breeder, Cathal Duignan, Laheens House, Eslin Bridge, Carrick-on-Shannon he was purchased by Co. Donegal breeders, Irwin & Alan McCandless, Gleneely, Lifford, Co. Donegal.


Second highest price of the day €9,200 was paid for third prize winner, ASHLEIGH JUPITER bred by Tony Grady, Clairnstown, Julianstown, Co. Meath.  By Major he is out of a home bred dam by Doonally New.  He was purchased by Tom Reilly, Keady, Co. Armagh, N.I.


A bid of €7,200 secured the Senior Champion KILBLINE INSTIGATOR for the day’s, Judge, John Irvine, Inverlochy Farm, Ballindalloch, Tomintoul, Scotland.  Bred by Noel Sugrue, Kilbline Hse., Bennettsbridge, Co. Kilkenny he is by Oscar and out of a home bred dam by Doonally New.    He was also Senior Male Calf Champion at the 2014 National Charolais Show.


The Sugrue family also took the Junior Championship with KILBLINE JOBURG who had previously been a First Prize Winner at the 2014 National Show.     A full brother to the Senior Champion he was purchased by a top south of Ireland farmer for €7,000.


Another happy breeder was William Flynn, Tullyvillage, Newbridge, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway who took home €16,900 for his 3 sale entries.


First up was €6,600 for TULLYVILLAGE JIM, a second prize winner from the sale class at the top price bull of the sale. TULLYVILLAGE JIM is by Doonally New and out of a home bred dam by Utrillo BP. He was purchased by James Dunlop, Coalisland, Co. Tyrone, N.I.


His next highest price was €6,100 for TULLYVILLAGE JAMESON by Nippur and out of a Pirate bred dam.   He was purchased by Joe Walsh, Pollough, Rosscahill, Co. Galway.


His final bull TULLYVILLAGE JEREMIAH sold for €4,200 to Damien Holland, Strabane, Tyrone.


€6,300 was received by another local breeder, Jon Regan, Liscally, Tawley, Castlegal, Co. Leitrim for his second prize winner (from the same class as the junior champion).


By Liscally Eti he is out of an imported dam by Maerdy Super.  He was purchased by Derek Anderson, Irvinstown, Co. Fermanagh, N.I.


€6,000 was received by David Kenny, Woodstock, Ballindine, Co. Mayo for his first prize winner CASTLEWOOD IVAN.   By Anside Foreman and out of a home bred dam by Major he was purchased by Fergal McKenna, Clogher, Co. Tyrone, N.I.


€5,800 was paid for CLOUGHBRACK JASPER, a fourteen months old son of Pirate.


Bred by Mattie Kelly, Cloughbrack, Newbridge, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway he was purchased by Noel Anderson, Kesh, Co. Fermanagh.


€5,400 secured first prize winner LISNAGRE IFY for Billy Glazebrook, Strathaven, Scotland.   Bred by Jim Geoghegan, Streamstown, Mullingar he is by Pirate and out of a Major bred dam.


►Two lots shared the €5,300 price tag:


First, €5,300 went to Patrick McDermott, Stranorlar, Lifford for his second prize winner TRENAMULLEN IMPECCABLE.   By Caherobert Anthony (a son of Doonally New) he is out of a home bred dam by Thrunton Voldemort.    Purchaser is Tomas Kerin, Bellharbour, Co. Clare.


Second €5,300 was received by local vet Tom Crowe, Summerhill, Carrick-on-Shannon for CLOGHER JEREMY, a thirteen months old son of Pirate.  He is out of a home bred dam by Fury Action.   Purchaser is Sadie Quinn, Stradone, Co. Tyrone.

FEMALES


Females, mainly young heifers sold to a top of €6,000 and an average of €3,288.


Top price of €6,000 was received by Kieran Daly, Tawnytallan, Tullaghan, Co. Leitrim for fourteen months old TAWNY JASMINE by Doonally New and out of a Padirac bred dam.   She was purchased by Nigel Matchett, Portadown, Co. Armagh.


Kieran sold his second young heifer TAWNEY IONA for €3,200 to Arthur Wilson, Ballymoney, Co. Antrim.


Female champion BALLYBROWN HILDA sold for €5,200 to John B yrne, Malin, Lifford, Co. Donegal.   Bred by Bobby O’Connell, Ballybrown, Clarina, Co. Limerick she is by the French bull Adonis and out of an imported French cow Contesse whose pedigree goes back to the great French bull Durandal.


Reserve Female Championship went to Eugene Donohoe, Ballagh, Newtownforbes, Co. Longford for his 17 month sold heifer BALLAGH ILENA by Lisnagre Elite and out of an Oldstone Egbert bred dam.


Price range for heifers was from €2,000 to €6,000.
