EASY CALVING, HIGH-INDEX BULLS PROVED TO BE IN HIGH DEMAND

Eighteen-month-old Kilvilcorris Joe lead the trade in Tullamore on Saturday last selling for the highest price of the day at €6,000. Bred and exhibited by Matt and PJ Ryan from Drom, Borrisoleigh, Thurles, Co Tipperary, he is by the noted AI bull Prime Roberto, and sold with a five-star terminal index of €122 to Stephen Reilly, Creevy, Roscommon.

The Ryans had another successful day selling all their five entries.  In addition to the €6,000, they received:

►€3,700 for 13-month-old Kilvilcorris Lewis by CF 52 from John Finan, Cloonagh, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon.

►€3,550 for Kilvilcorris Jace, again by Prime Roberto, from Charles Fenton, Kelshamore, Doward, Co. Wicklow.

►Next up was Kilvilcorris Lancelot 2 by CF 52 at €3,050 to James Foley, Wheelagower, Ballindaggin, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford and

► Kilvilcorris Jackson by Thrunton Voldermort then followed at €2,400, purchased by Michael Kelly, Castlereagh, Athlone, Co. Offaly.

Championship goes to first time exhibitor in Tullamore

The pre-sale show was hotly contested by eight first prize winners, with Terryville Leo coming out on top under Judge Martin Ryan from the well-known Goldstar herd in Thurles, Co Tipperary. Leo is a 15-month-old son of the English bred AI sire Thrunton Bonjovi. Exhibited by Patsy Lynch from Moville, Lifford, Co Donegal, he sold with a five-star terminal index of €134, a five-star replacement index and was knocked down at €4,500 to John Higgins, Castlerea House, Moydow, Co. Longford.

Reserve championship went to Co. Mayo breeder Charles Hughes from Westport. Clewbay 12 Julius Caesar is an 18-month-old son of the UK AI sire Elgin Davinci and sold for €4,000 to Daniel O’Sullivan, Gleesk, Kells, Caherciveen, Co. Kerry.  Charles also sold two bulls the previous Saturday in Carrick-on-Shannon at similar prices and to complete a great week his grandson received his First Communion last Saturday

James Brady from Dring, Co. Longford sold his 18-month-old bull Purth Jagger for €4,700 to Jason Elliott, Annahard, Newtownbutler, Co. Fermanagh.  A son of the popular AI sire Pirate, this bull has a calving figure of just 6.8%.

Second in his class to the champion Riversdale Landmark, exhibited by Kevin Maguire from Dunderry, Navan, Co Meath sold for €4,400. A son of Indurain, this bull has a five-star terminal index of €135 and he was purchased by Walter Hearne, Passage East, Waterford.

Mattie Kelly from Newbridge, Ballinasloe, Co Galway was next up selling his 14-month-old Cloughbrack Lenny for €4,050. This young son of Goldstar Echo sold to David Rothwell, Barnahask, Bunclody, Co. Wexford.

Kerry breeder Kieran Harty from Ballyheigue had a successful day out selling Atlantic HHK Jimmy for €4,050. This son of the French bred Voimo (VMO) and a Texan Gie dam has a calving figure of just 6%. He was purchased by Dan Melody, Clonmoney, Bunratty, Co. Clare.   Kieran also sold Atlantic HHK Josh, another five-star terminal index bull by CF 52 for €3,050 to Harry Mellody, Menlough, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway.

Youngest bull in the sale and last into the ring Ballym Louis sold for €3,300 to Kevin Smith, Cormeen, Stradone, Co. Cavan.   Bred by Louis Quinn, Ballymoran House, Edenderry, Co. Offaly he had a five star replacement index and four star terminal index and a calving figure of just 6.4%.   Sire Toledo (TZT) is a son of Nelson and dam is by Pirate.

Two bulls shared the price tag of €3,200; the first was Cloongrehan Lucas 2, again by the popular CF 52, from Michael O’ Hara from Cootehall, Boyle, Co Roscommon.  He was purchased by Ann Dooley, Whitepark, Roscrea, Co. Tipperary; and finally Tullaghan Leroy, sired by Goldstar Echo, exhibited by Michael Daniel Daly from Tullaghan, Co. Leitrim sold to local man Sammy Crampton, Clonmel, Clonbullogue, Co. Offaly.

Price range for the bulls was from €2,000 to €6,000 with an average of €3,358.

The final spring Charolais Society sale is scheduled for Saturday 21st May in Tullamore with 86 bulls catalogued.
