Reports 2012

Following on from our unglorious summer weather which resulted in many shows having to cancel their event, the Charolais National Show was looked forward to with much anticipation and it did not disappoint. The huge attendance at last Sunday’s event in Carrick-on-Shannon saw a show case of top Charolais quality in both the pedigree and commercial world.

Proceeding got under way at 11.00 a.m. with young Charolais enthusiasts showing their handling and presentation skills.

The junior section (8 – 12 year olds) was won by Conor Craig from Edgeworthstown, the intermediate section (13 – 15 year olds) won by Michael Carey, Killucan, Co. Westmeath and the seniors (16 – 25 year olds) won by Niall Flynn, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway.

Following a five hour judging stint, Basil Bothwell from Killeshandra, Co. Cavan tapped forward PRIMA FATCHA as his senior female champion of the show. Bred by Benny Keating, Templemore she was a third prize winner at the 2011 National Show and took a red rosette at this year’s Tullamore/AIB National Livestock Show. She is by “Bowerhouses Topper” and out of a home bred dam “Prime Sue” by “Domino”.

In ring two, Judge Clive Jennings from Enniskeane, Co. Female judge, Basil Bothwell awarded the Junior Pedigree Female Calf championship sash to KILCUMRERAGH HESEGARA. From the same herd as the Reserve Junior Male Calf champion (breeder Damien Kelly from Moate) she was born on 19th January 2012, is by “Oldstone Egbert” and out of a “Dovea Gin Tonic” dam. Sligo, for their heifer SAGESSE HENRIETTA who was also a first prize winner from the Tullamore/AIB National Livestock Show. She is a half sister (out of the same dam) to last year’s champion who sold at the Christmas Cocker sale for €14,200. The first ever Charolais Stockmans’ Workshop proved to be a truly outstanding event…finishing with Charolais Gold steaks, kindly donated by Dawn Meats.

Superbly organised by Martin Ryan and the Midland & South East club, over 300 attended and the general consensus of opinion was that it was a most enjoyable and informative event.  The afternoon’s event included tips and information on nutrition and management given by Martin Ryan, demonstations and lots of practical tips on halter making, clipping and grooming given by Leo McEnroe, the art of showmanship, courtesy in the ring and showing your animal to its best advantage was a most interesting presentation given by Alison Connolly, linear scoring demonstration and the advantages to the breeder of scoring was given by Basil Bothwell and a demonstration and question & answer session led by Rose Goulding, Jon Regan and Basil Bothwell on picking the right heifer to make a cow.  The stock judging event proved to be very popular and instead of one big prize, all correct entries were put in a box and 20 names were drawn with each receiving a bucket of Charolais soap.

It must be interesting !- section of the very large number of attendees
