| Saturday’s show and sale of weanling bulls in Carrigallen mart saw a great demand and vibrant trade for Charolais cross weanlings. The show sponsored by the Irish Charolais Cattle Society was hotly contested by a wonderful display of top quality weanlings from all breeds. Once again Charolais lead the way both in the show ring and the sales ring.
Scooping the overall champion of the show having earlier been awarded the champion Charolais was Sheamus Mc Phillip from Kilnaleck, Co. Cavan with his January 2014 born Charolais cross weanling. Weighing 480kgs he went on to sell for €1320 (2.75c/kg). Taking second prize for his Charolais cross weanling was Sean Mc Govern from Killashandra, Co. Cavan. Sired by his ‘Enfield Plexus’ sired stock bull he weighed 475kgs and sold for €1300 (2.73c/kg). In third place was another Killashandra man Robert Magee. Sired by his ‘CF 52’ sired stock bull Robert’s weanling weighed 490kgs and sold for €1200 (2.44c/kg).
First prize in the younger category of Charolais weanlings was awarded to Seamus Brady from Dring, Co. Longford for his young calf sired by his ‘CF 52’ sired stock bull. He weighed 355kgs and sold for €1350 (3.80c/kg). Second prize in the same section was awarded to Andy Mc Govern from Cloone, Co. Leitrim. Sired by his stock bull ‘Riversdale Anchor’ by ‘Oscar’ he weighed 355kgs and sold for €1100 (3.09c/kg). In third place then was local man Jim Jackson with his Charolais cross weanling. Sired by ‘LGL’ Jim’s calf weighed 375kgs and sold for €1170 (3.12c/kg).
Leading individual prices of Charolais cross weanlings included: 295kgs €995 (3.37c/kg), 265kgs €1130 (4.26c/kg), 290kgs €1095 (3.77c/kg), 290kg €1090 3.75c/kg), 285kgs €1075 (3.77), 285kgs €1075 (3.77c/kg), 275kgs €1065 (3.87c/kg), 350kgs €1230 (3.51c/kg), 335kgs €1150 (3.43c/kg), 360kgs €1210 (3.36c/kg) |
