|A smaller than usual sale entry attracted a good crowd to the Spring show and sale in Athenry.
The Reserve Champion – GRANGWOOD PETITE DOR received the top price of the sale €4,200 from Oliver Ryan, Upperchurch Village, Thurles, Co. Tipperary. Bred by Jerry O’Keeffe, Woodlawn, Grange, Knocklong, Co. Limerick he is by Goldstar Echo and out of a home bred dam by Enfield Picasso. He has the top five star rating in both the Terminal and Replacement indexes.
The champion from local breeder, Mattie Kelly, Cloughbrack, Newbridge, Ballinasloe was CLOUGHBRACK JOEY. By Nippur and out of a home bred dam by Enfield Plexus he has four stars in the Terminal and four stars in the Replacement indexes. He was unsold on the day but is entered for the next Society sale on 23rd April in Tullamore.
A second sale offering from Mattie CLOUGHBRACK JERRY was second in his class to the reserve champion and sold for €3,600 to Thomas Hynes, Lissylisheen, Kilfenora, Co. Clare. By Pirate he is out of a home bred dam by Doonally New and also had five stars in both indexes.
The third prize winner from the same class WINDMILL LARRY sold for €2,750. Bred by Michael Nerney, Elphin, Co. Roscommon he is by Fleetwood and out of a home bred dam by Pirate. He has five stars in the Terminal index and four in the Replacement index and was purchased by local man Michael McEvilly, Pribbaun, Roscahill, Co. Galway.
€2,700 was received by Mattie Kelly for his third sale offering CLOUGHBRACK JAKEY. By Oscar he is out of a home bred dam by Loch Ness. With the top 5 star rating in the replacement index he was purchased by Kevin Connors, Deerpark, Ballycrissane, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway.
Price range for the bulls was from €2,000 to €4,200 with an average of €2,717. Next Society sale is on Saturday, 23rd April in Tullamore Mart.
