NATIONAL SHOW 2012 – A GREAT DAY FOR CHAROLAIS 16/09/2012 | ||
Following on from our unglorious summer weather which resulted in many shows having to cancel their event, the Charolais National Show was looked forward to with much anticipation and it did not disappoint. The huge attendance at last Sunday’s event in Carrick-on-Shannon saw a show case of top Charolais quality in both the pedigree and commercial world.
Proceeding got under way at 11.00 a.m. with young Charolais enthusiasts showing their handling and presentation skills. The junior section (8 – 12 year olds) was won by Conor Craig from Edgeworthstown, the intermediate section (13 – 15 year olds) won by Michael Carey, Killucan, Co. Westmeath and the seniors (16 – 25 year olds) won by Niall Flynn, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway. Following a five hour judging stint, Basil Bothwell from Killeshandra, Co. Cavan tapped forward PRIMA FATCHA as his senior female champion of the show. Bred by Benny Keating, Templemore she was a third prize winner at the 2011 National Show and took a red rosette at this year’s Tullamore/AIB National Livestock Show. She is by “Bowerhouses Topper” and out of a home bred dam “Prime Sue” by “Domino”. In ring two, Judge Clive Jennings from Enniskeane, Co. Cork awarded the senior male championship sash to a delighted Victoria Kells who was showing DALEHILL GERRY for her dad Basil from Derrylane, Killeshandra, Co. Cavan. He is by “Bova Banker” and out of a home bred dam “Dalehill Una” by “Doonally New”. An hour later Clive selected a young heifer calf owned by M. & F. Commercials, as his overall commercial champion of the show. Born April 2012 and by “Hermes” she was shown by Michael Feeney and Frank Judge. His male commercial champion was also a young calf (born March this year) by “Ali Baba” shown by Roy & Clive Stevenson, from Letterkenny, Co. Donegal. Earlier in the day he selected an April born calf TAWNEY HEAT SEEKER as his Junior Pedigree Male Calf Champion. Bred by Ciaran Daly, Tullaghan, Co. Leitrim he is by “Lisnagre Elite” and out of a home bred dam by “Doonally New”. Reserve Junior Male Championship went to KILCUMRERAGH HARRIS bred by Damien Kelly from Moate, Co. Westmeath. By their stock bull “Roundhill Cameron” he was out of an “Achille” bred dam. His Senior Male Calf Champion AGHAFAD GAMIN was bred in Co. Monaghan by Edward Walsh, Carrickmacross. Born September 2011 he is by “Dromiskin Pedro” and out of a “Jupiter” bred dam. Reserve championship in the Senior Male Calf section went to LISNAGRE GALWAYBOY bred by Jim Geoghegan, Streamstown, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath. Born December 2011 he is by “Texan Gie” and out of a “Hermes” bred dam. Female judge, Basil Bothwell awarded the Junior Pedigree Female Calf championship sash to KILCUMRERAGH HESEGARA. From the same herd as the Reserve Junior Male Calf champion (breeder Damien Kelly from Moate) she was born on 19th January 2012, is by “Oldstone Egbert” and out of a “Dovea Gin Tonic” dam. A multi prize winner from the summer shows, she received the red rosette at Longford, Arva, Virginia, Moate & Elphin shows. Her dam “Lyonsdemesne Segara” was the Junior all Ireland Heifer Calf Champion in 2002. Reserve Junior Championship was awarded to Niall Canning & his father Brendan from Rosses Point, Co. Sligo, for their heifer SAGESSE HENRIETTA who was also a first prize winner from the Tullamore/AIB National Livestock Show. She is a half sister (out of the same dam) to last year’s champion who sold at the Christmas Cocker sale for €14,200. The herd also received a second prize rosette for “Sagesse Gabrielle” out of the same dam as the reserve champion and by “Major”.
