‘Premier’Charolais bull producing the goods for Co. Dublin suckler farmer
‘Crossmolina Hermes’ was purchased at the 2013 Premier show and sale in Tullamore by Ollie and Paul Hurley from Saggart, Co. Dublin. Since his arrival Hermes has made a big impression producing an outstanding batch of first calves in 2014. Sired by the well-known AI sire ‘Crossmolina Euro’, Hermes calves are easily born and to date have performed exceptionally well. The majority of the cows on the farm are Limousin/Simmental cross Friesians which seem to be complimenting the new sire perfectly.
Last autumn Hermes’s first offspring were sold as weanlings in Blessington mart. At just 9 months old his first pen of weanling bulls averaged 430kg and sold for €1080 (2.51c/kg). As an added bonus they picked up the award for the best pen of weanling bulls on the day. His next batch of weanlings averaged 302kg at just 7 months old and sold for €875 (2.89c/kg). His third batch of weanlings averaged 308kg again at just 7 months old and sold for €870 (2.82c/kg). With well over 40 calves now born to Hermes, he is truly tried and tested. Most of all do, the Hurley’s are extremely pleased with the daily live weight gain of their Charolais calves and the weight for age that Hermes offspring is now giving them.
