BRENDAN CANNING – WINNER OF THE HALL OF FAME AWARD 2025

The Council of the Irish Charolais Cattle Society has chosen Brendan Canning from the SAGESSE CHAROLAIS PEDIGREE herd as the society’s winner of the National Hall of Fame Award for 2025.

Brendan has been honoured for his outstanding contributions to Charolais breeding in Ireland.  Despite its small size, his Sagesse Herd has consistently produced elite cattle that have left a lasting impact on both national and international breeding.

Brendan’s passion for Charolais breeding began in 1987 with the purchase of his first pedigree Charolais from the Skidoo Herd.  His commitment to superior genetics gained recognition in 1999 when his breeding program secured the Reserve National Calf title at the Tullamore Show.

In 2006, Brendan strategically acquired Brillante, the La Roche Sur Yon Calf Champion from France.  This elite breeding cow played a pivotal role in shaping the herds future success along the scenic Atlantic coastline.

Since 2009, the Sagesse Herd has consistently dominated Irish Charolais breeding. Key achievements include:

– Two bulls sold to AI stations, solidifying the herds reputation for quality genetics. Over 20 National Titles, an extraordinary feat for a small herd.

– Two Tullamore National Show Gold Medal winners (2017 & 2023) & Silver Medal winner in 2019.

– Regular appearances at the National Ploughing Championships, gaining widespread media attention.

Brendan’s contributions extend beyond breeding.  In 2018, the Sagesse Herd won the Sligo Business Award for its impact on the region’s agriculture. In 2020, it earned international recognition with the prestigious Ms. Europe award.

Sagesse bloodlines continue to excel for other breeders, producing top-tier cattle. Notable sales include: Rocky sold for a record €19,000 for David Watts.

Florienne fetched €14,200 and later bred high-priced cattle for the O’Kane Brothers in Stirling.

Brendan’s Hall of Fame induction is a well-deserved tribute to his lifelong dedication to the Charolais breed.  His expertise and passion have left an enduring mark on Irish pedigree breeding, inspiring future generations.  We would like to congratulate Brendan on winning the award.  He’s a very worthy winner.
