Inishowen show set to host €2,000 Charolais calf championship

On the 15th of July 2017, the Inishowen agricultural show will present the 1st North West (Open) Charolais Calf Championship, with a total prize fund of €2,000. There has been a large entry for all the calf classes this year. There has also been an increase in entry’s for the senior female championship and the senior male championship, from herds all across Donegal and the north west of Ireland.

A catalogue will be available on the day of the show including full pedigree details for each animal, as well as the individual star ratings.The show is also holding its 1st ever All Ireland Commercial Calf Championship. Judge for the day is Mr Will Shortt, who runs the 60 cow Woodpark pedigree Charolais herd in Co. Tyrone.

Goldstar Adorable still winning championships at 12 years old

The prolific show cow, Goldstar Adorable notched up yet another championship title in Clonmel last weekend for breeder, Martin Ryan from Thurles, Co. Tipperary. The outstanding show cow who turned twelve in January was accompanied by her heifer calf, Goldstar Melodie, who is an October 2016 born daughter of Virtuose. Adorable, who is a daughter of the French sire, Theodat, has been shown successfully on numerous occasions over her lifetime.

Meanwhile further north, the January 2017 born, Cassina Nelson is proving to be the one to beat. The Mandela Veron bred calf exhibited by Martin Clyne from Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford has been crowned champion Charolais at both Dundalk and Longford shows.

Charolais in fine form on southern show circuit

The Charolais breed has got of to a wonderful start in the summer shows in the south of Ireland. One of the early shows of the year was the Cork Summer Show, were Jerry’ O Keeffe from Knockong, Co. Limerick took top honors in the Charolais section with his young bull calf, Grangewood Nugget ET.  The January 2017 born Nugget then went one better in the overall Interbreed championship, winning the reserve overall champion of the show. A great achievement for the five month old Goldstar Echo son.

Interbreed champion in Charleville sired by Lanzac

Next up was Charleville show which took place last weekend. Taking center stage here was Shane Giltinane’s Charolais X heifer sired by Lanzac. This impressive heifer won the commercial champion before being crowned the overall interbreed champion of the show. Standing next to her for the reserve interbreed championship was Martin Ryan’s cow, Goldstar Haidi, accompanied by her bull calf, Goldstar Noah. Following on from his success in Cork show, Grangewood Nugget ET was back in winning form as he picked up the male Charolais champion and the interbreed calf champion of the show for his owner, Jerry O’ Keeffe.
