Charolais Weanlings in GREAT DEMAND 2/10/2013

TERRIFIC QUALITY … AND TERRIFIC TRADE FOR BOTH MALES AND FEMALES

On Monday the 30^th of September, Elphin Livestock Mart hosted their annual show and sale of Charolais weanlings. With over 500 males and 300 females entered there was an outstanding turn out of quality weanlings from all over the country. It was quite clear from the outset that quality charolais weanlings were in demand with one of the first animals into the ring, a 330kg weanling bull selling for €1390 (€4.21/kg).

With the sale of males off to a flying start Charolais weanlings hit a top of €1650 for a 620kg bull. Next highest in the male section was €1450 for a 575kg weanling bull. A 440kg bull then made €1420, a 390kg bull made €1400 and a 385kg bull made €1390. Other prices included €1370 for a 385kg bull and €1200 for a 335 kg bull. This cracking trade continued throughout the day with a serious demand for charolais weanling bulls.

In the female ring a top price of €1245 was achieved for a 515kg weanling heifer. Next highest was €1190 for a 400kg heifer, €1175 for a 350kg heifer and €1135 for a 425kg heifer. Other prices included €1130 for a 370kg heifer and €1105 for a 350kg heifer. Just like the bulls, this blitzing trade for heifers continued throughout the day.

In the pre-sale show for the best pen of charolais weanlings sponsored by the Irish Charolais Cattle Society, Derek Beirne from Elphin, Co. Roscommon took first place in the male section. The weanlings were sired by Derek’s stock bull, a Dromiskin Viceroy (VCR) son and were out of Charolais, Limousin and Simmental cross cows.

Taking second place in the male section was Gerry and Donal Connellan from Maynooth, Co Kildare. Gerry and Donal’s weanlings were sired by their own stock bull, once again a Dromiskin Viceroy Son and out of Charolais and Limousin cross cows.

Taking third prize in the male section then was Ollie Lohan from Curraghroe, Co. Roscommon. Ollie’s weanlings were sired by his own stock bull, a Roundhill Doc (RHI) son and were out of Charolais and Limousin cross cows.

In the female section, Michael Connellan from Kilmore, Co. Roscommon took first place with his pen of charolais heifers. Michael’s heifers were sired by his own stock bull, a grandson of Doonally New (CF52) and were out of Charolais and Simmental cross cows.

Taking second place in the female section was second prize winners in the male section, Gerry and Donal Connellan. Gerry and Donal’s heifers were also sired by their Dromiskin Viceroy stock bull.

Finally in third place in the female section was Gerry Farrell from Newtown Cashel, Co. Longford. Gerry’s heifers were sired by his Doonally New stock bull.
