BIG DEMAND FOR CHAROLAIS WEANLINGS IN ELPHIN

Farmer buyers dominated the trade at the annual show and sale of Charolais weanlings in Elphin mart on Monday the 29th of September.  Mart Manager Gerry Connellan delighted with the very lively trade for some 500 bulls and 300 heifers stated that it was a great sign of confidence returning to weanling producers and the higher prices  reflected the quality of the cattle on offer. The pre-sale show sponsored by the Irish Charolais Cattle Society was packed with over 100 pens of super Charolais weanlings.

Taking first prize for the best pen of Charolais weanling bulls under one year old was Derek Beirne from Elphin, Co. Roscommon. This is the second year running Derek has taken the top spot in this category with weanlings by his ‘Dromiskin Viceroy’ sired stock bull. Derek’s pen of Charolais weanlings later sold at an average weight of 410kgs and an average price of €1142 (2.78c/kg).

Taking second prize for the best pen of Charolais weanling bulls and heifers under one year old was John Mulloly from Elphin, Co. Roscommon. These weanlings are sired by the herd’s stock bull by ‘Alibaba’. John’s lot of weanling bulls later sold at an average weight of 354kgs at an average price of €1030 (2.90c/kg). His heifers sold at an average weight of 323kgs at an average price of €942 (2.91c/kg).

In third place for the best pen of Charolais bulls was Tom Cox Curry Farms, Strokestown, Co. Roscommon. Tom’s weanlings are bred from his ‘CF 52’ and ‘Indurain’ sired stock bulls.  They went on to sell at an average weight of 376kgs and an average price of €1075 (2.85c/kg).

Taking top spot for the best pen of Charolais heifers under one year old was Michael Connellan Carrick-On-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. Sired by his stock bull a son of the great ‘CF 52’they went on to sell at an average weight of 299kgs and an average price of €943 (3.15c/kg). Third prize in the heifer section was awarded to Joe Beirne from Boyle Co. Roscommon. Joe’s pen of Charolais heifers went on to sell at an average weight of 259kgs at an average price of €856 (3.30c/kg).

Leading individual prices of Charolais weanling bulls included: 295kgs €1185 (4.00c/kg), 265kgs €990 (3.73c/kg), 275kgs €1000 (3.63c/kg), 300kgs €1080 (3.60c/kg), 355kgs €1230 (3.46c/kg), 390kgs €1275 (3.26c/kg), 340kgs €1145 (3.36c/kg), 235kgs €780 (3.31c/kg), 310kgs €1105 (3.35c/kg), 255kgs €875 (3.43c/kg), 380kgs €1300 (3.42c/kg), 360kgs €1210 (3.36c/kg), 380kgs €1260 (3.31c/kg).

Leading individual prices of Charolais weanling heifers included: 260kgs €1165 (4.48c/kg),  260kgs €1100 (4.23c/kg),  260kgs €970 (3.73c/kg), 290kgs 1050 (3.60c/kg),  250kgs €830 (3.32c/kg), 280kgs €930 (3.32c/kg), 370kgs €1190 (3.21c/kg), 300kgs €1000 (3.33c/kg), 350kgs €1150 (3.28c/kg), 290kgs €980 (3.37c/kg), 250kgs €815 (3.26c/kg), 290kgs €910 (3.13c/kg), 400kgs €1260 (3.15c/kg).
