Charolais weanling heifers top at 4.31c/kg in Carrigallen


Once again Charolais weanling heifers met a flying trade in Carrigallen on Saturday last. The younger, lighter Charolais heifers were really keenly sought after by both farmers and exporters.


In the pre-sale show local man Richie Nixon had very successful morning taking the award for champion charolais heifer and the best pen of four Charolais heifers. His champion heifer went on to sell for €1250 at 420kg (2.97c/kg). His pen of four Charolais heifers sold at an average price of €1170 at an average weight of 368kg (3.17c/kg). They are all sired by Richie’s stock bull a son of ‘Fury Action’.


Taking the award for best Charolais heifer under one year old was Seamus Brady from Dring, Co. Longford with a heifer sired by his stock bull a son ‘CF 52’. She later sold for €1080 at 300kg (3.60c/kg). The best Charolais heifer born in 2014 was awarded to Mervyn Parker from Belturbet, Co. Cavan. She went on to sell for €1090 at 345kg (3.15c/kg). The same man also sold a second prize winning Charolais heifer at €1070 at 325kg (3.29c/kg).


Declan Dinneny from Killashandra Co. Cavan and local man Frank Mc Govern both picked up second prize rosettes for their two Charolais heifers. Declan’s heifer later sold for €1300 at 405kg (3.20c/kg) with Frank’s heifer selling for €1120 at 430kg (2.66c/kg). Picking up third prize rosettes were Michael Nicholl from Corriga, Co. Leitrim and another local man Sean Mc Govern. Michael’s heifer went on to sell for €1190 at 345kg (3.44c/kg) with Sean selling his 415kg Charolais heifer at €1270 (2.90c/kg).


Leading individual prices of Charolais weanling heifers included: 225kg €970 (4.31c/kg), 265kg €940 (3.54c/kg), 280kg €935 (3.33c/kg), 260kg €910 (3.50c/kg), 315kg €1190 (3.77c/kg), 367kg €1170 (3.18c/kg), 400kg €1200 (3.00c/kg).
