SPRING PREMIER 7/03/2016
A good show of cattle met a good trade at the Charolais spring premier in Elphin on Saturday last. The real tops of the bulls were in great demand and the sale overall achieved a clearance of 65% with one bull exported to Scotland, and twelve going to Northern Ireland. Numbers going North were less than usual as the Northern Ireland breeders held their own pedigree sale on the previous day.


Sale leaders at €10,500 were the senior and junior champions.


Senior championship went to LISNAGRE JESSY bred by Jim Geoghegan, Lisnagre, Streamstown, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath.  A first prize winner at last year’s national show he is by Lisnagre Elite (LGL) and out of a home bred dam by Maerdy Sinndar.  He was purchased by J.P. Higgins, Springfield, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh.


Following on from his great success at the Christmas Cracker Jim sold his second bull LISNAGRE JAMESON (by Major and out of Ballydownan Simone) to Scottish breeder, Murray Lyle, Dunblane, Perthshire, Scotland for €6,200 and his third sale entry LISNAGRE JORDAN (by Lisnagre Handsome and out of a home bred dam by Major) to Thomas Mulligan, Ardacarra, Bohola, Co. Mayo for €4,400.


Junior male championship went to Co. Donegal breeder, Pat McClean, Roughan, Newtowncunningham, Lifford, Co. Donegal for ROUGHAN JADEN by his stock bull Roughan Enzo and out of a home bred dam by another stock bull Roughan Verygood.


He sold at €10,500 to S & D Bothwell, St. Angelo, Ballina Mallard, Co. Fermanagh.


Not stopping there, Pat sold his second prize winner ROUGHAN JACKSON (by Roughan Galant and out of a home bred dam by Roughan Divin) for €8,000 to Padraic Hegarty, Farnagh Hill, Longford, and his third prize winner ROUGHAN JAGGER (by Roughan Galant and out of a home bred dam by Roughan Viceroy) for €6,000 to Jimmy Cosgrove, Enfield, Co. Meath.   All three were in the same class.


Pat’s fourth sale entry, also a second prize winner ROUGHAN JERIMIAH (by Roughan Echo and out of a home bred dam by Roughan Divin) sold for €5,000 to Eamon Rice, Market Hill, Armagh.   The happiest seller at the sale Pat took home a grand total of €29,500 for his 4 bulls.


A first prize rosette was received by the Feeney Brothers from Scurmore, Enniscrone, Co. Sligo for BOSTONIA JAMESON.   Gregory home from Boston for the week-end to attend the sale was delighted to see their bull sell for €7,100 to Co. Clare breeder, Dan Melody, Bunratty.     By Blelack Digger he is out of a Padirac bred dam.


€6,500 was received by Basil Kells, Bohora, Derrylane, Killeshandra, Co. Cavan for their first prize winner DALEHILL JASPER.    (He was reserve Junior Male Calf champion at the 2015 National Show).    By Prime Roberto and out of a home bred dam by Doonally New he was purchased by Barry Merrick, Ballyhowley House, Knock, Co. Mayo.  Basil also received €4,200 for DALEHILL LUKE by Prime Roberto and out of a Nevers bred dam.     He was purchased by Timmy Taylor, Monemore, Knocklong, Co. Limerick


€6,000 secured the reserve junior champion FIRODA JARROW for Joseph O’Reilly, Brickeens, Kenagh, Co. Longford.  Bred by Seamus Nolan, Firoda, Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny he is by Goldstar Echo and out of a home bred dam by Dromiskin Phoenix.


 €6,000 was also received by the McGovern Brothers, Kilmore, Fivemilebourne, Co. Leitrim for their first prize winner, CROSSANE LEONARDO (All Ireland Male calf champion at Elphin show).    By Pirate and out of Macmelvin Georgina (by Doonally New) he was purchased by Dessie Graham, The Mullins, Donegal.


€5,000 was received by Harry Noble, Kilcoursey, Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford for NOBLE JACE by Doonally New and out of a home bred dam by Noble Setter.    He was purchased by Gordon Cutler, Florence Court, Enniskillen.  Harry also sold first prize winner NOBLE JEHAID (by Pirate and out of a home bred dam by Oxford) for €4,000 to Michael Convery, N.I.  His third sale entry NOBLE JOHNTY (third prize winner in his class) by Goldstar Echo and out of a home bred dam by Major sold for €2,800 to Pat McIntyre, Kilnavart, Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan.


€5,000 was paid by James Coleman, Lissalough, Coolaney, Co. Sligo for SUNNAGHMORE JAGUAR bred by Andy McGovern, Gubbs, Cloone, Co. Leitrim.   Sire is Doonally New and he is out of a Pirate bred dam.


€4,500 was received by Michael & Mary Quin for their second prize winner CLENAGH JOSH by Dromiskin Viceroy and out of a home bred dam by Pirate.   He was purchased by Gerard White, Jonesborough, Newry, Co. Down.


Reserve Senior championship went to Michael Grant, Umrican, Buncrana, Co. Donegal for MAGHERMORE JUMPER.   By Lisnagre Elite and out of a home bred dam by Thrunton Voldermort.   He sold for €4,200 to Brian Quinn, Pomeroy, Co. Tyrone.


Young Charolais enthusiast Desmon Boyd from Woodbrook, Carrick-on-Shannon was delighted when their bull FAUS JOSH (by Indurain) sold for €4,100. His Dad tells me that the bull belongs to Desmond who unfortunately could not be at the sale as he is in hospital at the moment. We are delighted to hear things are going well for himand we send him our very best wishes and hope to see him in the very near future.

Price range for bulls was from €2,500 to €10,500 with a very good average of €4,300.


FEMALES


In the small female section top honours and top price went to local breeder, David Rattigan from Elphin.   David’s in-calf heifer RATTIGAN IGOLA is by Oldstone Egbert and out of Liscally Emeraldstar.  In calf to Thrunton BonJovi she sold for the top female price of the day €4,500 to Aidan Harte, Clones, Co. Monaghan.


Reserve female championship went to 14 months old ROOSKEYNAMONA JULIE bred by Gerard Mulligan, Mohill, Co. Leitrim.   By Elgin Davinci and out of a home bred dam by their stock bull Rooskeynamona Casper she sold for €1800 to Gerry Lynnot, Corbetstown, Killucan, Co. Westmeath.


€3,00 was received by Basil Bothwell, Dereskit, Killeshandra, Co. Cavan for his 2nd prize heifer DERESKIT IDA.  By his stock bull Roughan Callum and out of a home bred dam by Doonally New she was purchased by Tom Humphrey.


€3,000 was also received by Thomas Farrell, Cornadrung, Aughnacliffe, Co. Longford for CORNADRUNG JAMELIA.  By Pirate she is out of a home bred dam by Texan-Gie. She was purchased by Conor O’Neill, Pluckstown, Athboy, Co. Meath.


Three heifers sold at the €2,500 price tag:


First to receive €2,500 was Thomas Mulligan, Currycamp, Dromod, Co. Leitrim for CURRYCAMP JULIET.   By Lisnagre Elite and out of a Mogador bred dam she was purchased by Anthony Keeley, Cloonaff, Hillstreet, Carrick-On-Shannon.


Next €2,500 went to Michael Sheahan, High Park House, Cappawhite, Co. Tipperary for LUDDENMORE JOYEUSE VERON.     A third prize winner she is by Inverlochy Gurkha and out of a home bred dam by Major.  Purchaser is James Duke, Caggle, Strokestown, Co. Roscommon


Final €2,500 was received by Eoin O’Neill, Dromod Moran, Drumcong, Co. Leitrim for his young heifer DROMODMORAN JILLIAN.  By Thrunton BonJovi and out of Windmill Hero (by Roundhill Doc) she was purchased by Michael Stephen, Ballinderry, Cummer, Tuam, Co. Galway.


The price range for heifers was from €1,800 to €4,500 with an average of €2,600 and a clearance of just over 60%


Next Charolais Society sale is this Saturday, 12th March in Tullamore with 54 bulls on offer, all fertility tested and fertility insured.
